Smoking Support Because It Is Difficult To Quit
Whenever you think about trying to stop smoking you know that it is going to be very difficult. How can you change a habit that you had all your life? The idea of not smoking anymore is not pleasant, but you know deep down inside that you will be healthier and those people around you that you love will also be healthier and happier. If you are seriously considering you are going to stop smoking, you should begin by talking to your family and friends and to gain their support for your effort. It is not easy to stop smoking, especially after so many years, but it can be done and a good support system will be invaluable to your success.
Talk openly to everyone about the support you are hoping to get from them when it comes to helping you stop smoking. Let them know what would be helpful to you such as helping you stay busy and understanding that you might be a bit edgy and irritable at times. Also tell them that you will need them throughout the process and that they are an important piece of your network to get you through the difficult times. Visit your family doctor and talk to him about your plans. He may want to give you a routine examination to check your overall health and, in fact, this might be a great way to measure the difference in your health from now until later when your body starts healing itself and adjusting from your lifestyle change. In addition, you and the doctor may agree that a medical treatment may also be beneficial while your system is adjusting to not having its daily dose of nicotine. This may be in a prescribed medication, a smoking patch, or even a self-help group where you can get together with other people who are going through the same stages of withdrawal that you are. Letting other people know that their support for your effort to stop smoking may be one of the most important things you can do. When selecting your smoking support group make sure that you do not include anyone that is currently smoking! The last thing you need is to be with friends who are lighting up and enjoying a cigarette. Before you know it, you will join them and the battle has been temporarily lost. Make sure you take your time to talk to everyone and to explain what you want. It will be their constant help and encouragement that will get through the difficult times. Do not be surprised if people get upset with you when you are grumpy, they will get over it and deep down inside, they know that this is just a temporary phase for you. Soon you will be back to your old happy go lucky self. |
